Hinamatsuri is an annual ‘Girls Festival’ that celebrates the healthy growth and happiness of girls everywhere. It is traditionally celebrated on March 3rd. During this festival it is customary to decorate the home with Hina dolls and peach blossoms to create a colourful, feminine space.

In this class, we will celebrate Hinamatsuri by cooking traditional Japanese cuisine.

Sushi Roll
Seasoned sushi rice roll with seaweed filled with seasonal ingredients Roll sushi is a feast to see and taste. The rice is a fresh mix of sushi and rice seasoned with traditional flavours. It’s the perfect healthy dish for Hinamatsuri – a festival centred on healthy growth of girls.

Hina-arare (Flavoured Rice Cake)
Hina-arare is a small dish with a big taste. The rice cakes come in three colours – each symbolising a special spring wish for growth:
Pink: The promise of new life
White: The melting snow of winter
Green: The Blossoming plants

Clam Soup (Clear Clam Broth)
A very special soup with the shellfish as its symbol. The shells of the clam have no gap and this reflects a beautiful spring wish for married couples. Made with only the simplest fresh ingredients, this soup is a traditional favourite served during Hinamatsuri.
