Prevent Falls, Restore Confidence: Tai Chi for Fall Prevention
As we age, the risk of falling rises significantly — and with it, the potential for serious injury. Contributing factors include muscle weakness, poor balance or vision, reduced confidence in movement, and the side-effects of medications. These aren’t inevitable parts of aging — and there’s a gentle, evidence-based solution that works: Tai Chi.
A key insight from Dr Lam’s research is that confidence matters as much as physical strength: fear of falling can increase fall risk, but by gently and steadily building balance and coordination, Tai Chi helps restore calm, confidence, and control.
How it works:
- Through slow, deliberate movements, you build muscular strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
- You also learn key tai chi principles — breathing, alignment, and calming the mind — which improve not just your physical stability but also your mental resilience.
- Regular practice helps you feel steadier, more confident, and less fearful of falling.
- It offers longevity of benefit: not just for preventing falls — you’ll also improve overall strength, flexibility, and well-being.
