Getting to Know Your Pastels – The Still Life Study
Theme: Introduction to Pastels and Basic Techniques
Artwork Goal: A simple still life study focusing on blending and layering.
Session 2 – 11 August
Capturing Light and Shadow – The Landscape Sketch
Theme: Value and Atmospheric Perspective
Artwork Goal: A landscape sketch emphasizing light, shadow, and a sense of depth.
Session 3 – 18 August
Exploring Color – The Floral Study
Theme: Color Theory and Expressive Application
Artwork Goal: A vibrant floral study focusing on color mixing and expressive mark-making.
Session 4 – 25 August
Bringing It All Together – The Subject of Choice
Theme: Personal Expression and Refining Techniques
Artwork Goal: A final piece based on the student’s choice of subject, incorporating the techniques learned throughout the course.
Materials
Materials will be provided for the first class only. At this class Joyce will show you what materials you need including:
- A set of soft pastels (various grades and colors)
- Pastel paper (toned papers in various colors are great for learning)
- Kneaded eraser
- Paper blending stumps or tortillons
- Fixative spray (for final pieces)
- Drawing board or easel (if available)
- Reference photos (provided by the instructor or students)
Joyce can also prepare a kit for a cost of $80.
