A Year in the Life of Boroondara – Camberwell Camera Club

The  “A Year in the Life of Boroondara” project was conceived, late 2023, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Boroondara as a local government area.

The plan was to produce a book celebrating all we love about Boroondara followed up by a Gallery Exhibition in the local community.  Our members were invited to photographically document life in Boroondara throughout 2024. Forty of the club’s 150 members participated, each submitting up to ten images quarterly for review by a panel of professional curators. By year’s end, over 1,200 images were considered, with more than 250 selected for the book which was published June 2025. This Exhibition is a sample of the rich offerings within the book, displaying an image from each of the photographers who were published.

The project brief for our photographers was simple: observe and record both the look and feel of Boroondara in an informative, eye-catching way; interpret as well as describe. The only constraints on capture were that the photo had to be taken within the Boroondara boundary and during 2024.

For the viewer, what has resulted is a feast of images, as richly varied as Boroondara itself, for the photographers an unforgettable learning experience in celebrating the world on their doorstep.

While the images in the Book and this Exhibition mark the project’s outcome, for the Camberwell Camera Club itself its lasting impact will be the journey itself – one of skills development, community involvement, shared experience and teamwork.

The Book and this Exhibition were made possible by the generosity of the Boroondara Council and the provision of a  Boroondara Arts Community Strengthening Grant.
