Discover the art of millinery and make something that you can wear and treasure forever. In this 2-day workshop you will learn how to make your own stylish headwear with one on Melbourne’s most experienced milliners, Sandra Buchanan.

Sinamay hats are commonly worn to formal or fancy events and are known for their stunning shape and striking silhouette. Sinamay is one of the most popular hat making foundations in the world. It is woven from the processed stalks of various trees and plants and is native to the Phillipines. The fibres are stronger than cotton or silk and ideal for hat-making as they hold their shape beautifully. At the end of the workshop you’ll have made a fascinator and two-piece cloche or brimmed hat to take home with you to put on display or wear to your next event.

Over the 8 hours of this 2-part workshop you will learn step-by-step the special techniques required to make your own Sinamay hat. Your teacher, Sandra has many years experience and has supplied headwear for weddings, the races and special events around the world.  She leads the group using in-depth demonstrations and clear explanations before assisting each member of the group and answering questions. She will take the time to make sure that you are on the right path and producing your best work!

The Sinamay Hat workshop is suitable for people who enjoy fashion, hats and textiles. Due to the in-depth nature of demonstration and assistance, the workshop is capped at 5 attendees only. You’ll love working and learning in a relaxed, easy fashion and in a small close-knit group. Some experience with hand stitching is an advantage but not necessary. Please note that many of the workshop materials will be supplied but attendees will receive a list of materials to purchase prior.

Due to the small class size it’s important to enrol early. You can enrol online or call the office.
