Hand bound books are quirky and unique. They can be a treasured memento for yourself, or you can make it to give as a thoughtful gift. The art of book binding is a useful skill. You can make hand-bound books from all kinds of paper, whether it be calendar photos, paper bags and wrapping paper. In this 2-part workshop you will learn how to make your own bound book from scratch. You will complete your book over two sessions. In the first workshop you will learn how to fold the pages and collate them, and how to bind them together using twine and tape. Your book will be pressed overnight before the second workshop, where you will prepare the cover and put the book together.
About your tutor, Kate Boulton
I’m an avid recycler of all manner of things, and I get a great deal of pleasure making beautiful things from what otherwise may have gone to landfill. My parents lived through the depression, so I learnt to hang onto things just in case they came in handy. We made do with what we had.
I love being able to make beautiful things from scraps. I consider it a gift and my calling. I don’t get much time to read lots of books these days, however I am constantly ‘reading textiles’ and looking for ways to make them into something beautiful and useful. I ran successful dressmaking and button making businesses in Melbourne, honing my skills professionally for over 40 years. On retiring four years ago, I have enjoyed using my extra time, turning my extensive stash of materials into new and beautiful art pieces.
